Shoofly pie contains molasses, brown sugar, and water for the filling. The crumb topping is made of flour, butter, sugar, and spices like cinnamon.
The name “shoofly pie” most likely refers to a popular brand of molasses called “Shoofly Molasses” that was common in early recipes. Contrary to popular belief, it wasn’t named because of the sweet molasses attracting flies that needed to be “shooed away”
